MUSKEGON, Mich. — On Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter McLane was towed across Muskegon Lake, away from the USS Silversides Submarine Museum in Muskegon.

The museum said they decided to remove the vessel from the museum's permanent collection after thoughtful deliberation by the staff and Board of Directors.

According to the museum, the McLane had been closed to the public since the spring of 2025 due to ongoing maintenance concerns. They said that after nearly a century of service in both salt and fresh water, the McLane's condition had deteriorated to the point of being inaccessible for public touring and "beyond the scope of feasible preservation."
