Manchester's Piccadilly Station was evacuated this evening (Wednesday) due a false fire alarm.

The drama unfolded shortly before 6pm.

Scores of passengers took to social media to say they had been ordered to leave the city's biggest and busiest railway station.

In video shared on X, formerly Twitter , an alarm could be heard sounding as people were asked to leave 'immediately.'

Pictures showed huge crowds gathered outside the station entrance on Piccadilly Approach.

One person described the situation as 'madness.'

Network Rail, which runs the station, has confirmed a fire alarm was activated in the area of the station containing the toilets and Sainsbury's store.
