WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — The Williamson County Tax Assessor's Office has issued a warning to residents about a new method being used by scammers to target victims.

According to the tax assessor's office, fake checks appearing to be from them are being sent to purchase large items, such as vehicles. The checks are worth more than the listed sales price, and come with a request that the seller send back the extra money.

The checks are illegitimate, the tax assessor's office says, and anyone who is selling a vehicle who receives a check that appears to be from the county should not deposit it under any circumstances.

Anyone who receives the check and is unsure of its authenticity is asked to call the Williamson County Tax Assessor/Collector Office at 512-943-1601.
