A mobile screening program developed by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute has uncovered high rates of heart diseases in older adults in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario that had previously gone undiagnosed.

The community outreach program began screening people over 65 with no known cardiovascular disease in the spring of 2023 — travelling to community centres, retirement homes, churches, malls and more with screening equipment in an effort to find and combat heart disease in the community.

Since the program began, it has screened more than 3,000 patients throughout Ottawa and Eastern Ontario, including some in need of urgent intervention for cardiovascular disease that had previously gone undiagnosed and many requiring follow ups at the Heart Institute.
