More than a thousand people will be taking to the city this Sunday to walk 35km to raise much-needed funds for mitochondria research.

In the early hours of the morning, 1222 walkers will take on The Bloody Long Walk beginning at Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth, then across the city before ending at Cottesloe Beach.

The nationwide fundraiser goes towards vital research. More than 133,000 walkers have raised over $24 million since it started in 2013.

This year Perth has a goal of raising $245,000, with donations currently at $195,000.

Funds raised support the Mito Foundation to find a cure for mitochondrial disease, while providing support to people impacted by mito through research, advocacy, and dedicated services and resources.
