The planes struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A third plane, likely targeting the White House or U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., crashed in Shanksville after passengers stormed the cockpit in an attempt to overtake the hijackers.
