MADISON (WKOW) -- New gun safety legislation is on the table as National Suicide Prevention Month is underway.

Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) and Rep. Lee Snodgrass (D-Appleton) introduced legislation Wednesday to create a voluntary Do Not Purchase list.

People who don't want to be able to purchase a handgun would be able to put themselves on the list and restrict their access to gun ownership.

"If you have access to a firearm and you're feeling thoughts of self-harm and you attempt suicide, you're having 90% likelihood of dying. Without a firearm involved that number drops to 4%. That is stunning," said Roys.

Roys says she is hopeful that bipartisan support will be easy to get with this bill, stating that suicide is not a partisan issue and the bill is straightforward with its intent.
