BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Political leaders across Alabama are mourning the death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed during an event in Utah Wednesday afternoon.

Kirk, 31, was a rising star in the conservative movement, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and a political firebrand who often targeted liberal causes and views he deemed to be "Marxist." Turning Point USA, which he founded in 2012, was aimed at recruiting more college-age students to the Republican Party. Despite never attending college himself, Kirk developed a strong following, both through TPUSA, as well as a radio show and a busy touring schedule where he would often debate college students and liberals across the country.
