WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. flags be lowered to half-staff through Sunday evening after Charlie Kirk , a conservative activist and close ally of the president, was shot and killed at an event on a Utah university campus.

"In honor of Charlie Kirk, a truly Great American Patriot, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Sunday evening at 6 P.M.," the president wrote on Truth Social.

Flags would have already been flown at half-staff on Thursday, Sept. 11 for Patriot Day, in accordance with federal law and tradition. The practice honors the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
