MADISON (WKOW) — A 17-year-old student who goes to La Follette High School was arrested for possession of a firearm.

School staff received a report that the student brought a gun to school on Tuesday. He left the campus, hid the weapon and returned for classes, according to a Madison Police Department incident report .

School officials contacted police, who used surveillance to identify the suspect.

Police later found an unloaded handgun in a yard along Pflaum Road. They also found ammunition in the student's backpack, along with a cell phone photo of the student holding the same gun that was recovered. He was also dressed in the same clothes he wore to school, police reported.
