NEW YORK (PIX11) -- As preparations for the 9/11 memorial service are underway, a key part of that process is security.

The ceremony is happening while the NYPD says that it's monitoring potential threats.

It's also occurring as the city begins hosting the United Nations General Assembly, as well as counting down to the Jewish high holidays. Wednesday's assassination in Utah is also underscoring the importance of heightened security at mass gatherings.

All over the city on Wednesday, police were visibly mobilized at a variety of sensitive locations, including the United Nations and the World Trade Center.
