The Conservation Fund announced the acquisition of a historical landmark in downtown Selma to help preserve it’s history.
The Edistone Hotel was in serious danger of caving in or being demolished after decades of neglect.
Built in 1855, the 170 year old building has a long past that includes Pre-Civil War — Post-Civil War — and Civil Rights history.
Sarah Aghedo with the Selma Redevelopment Authority has been working to save the building since 2022.
“If you look at other successful towns that have preserved their history, whether it’s Charleston or Savannah, or whether it’s some place closer like Mobile. What we have along Water Avenue and up Broad are some unique things that you can’t find anywhere else.”
