(Gray News) – President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Wednesday while speaking at a university campus in Utah.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” the president announced on his Truth social account shortly after the fatal shooting.

The 31-year-old was married and had two children.

Kirk, a founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, was speaking at Utah Valley University when he was hit in the upper body by a gunshot.

FBI Director Kash Patel said late Wednesday afternoon that a person of interest in the shooting was taken into custody for questioning.

“Those responsible will be held fully accountable,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said .
