BUXTON, N.D. — A Traill County man accused of shooting his neighbor’s dogs, killing one of them, will face trial in January.

Luther Lerfald, 77, is charged with two counts of animal abuse. Police say he shot his neighbor’s double doodle earlier this year and left it to die on the road in Buxton.

Lerfald is also accused of killing a golden retriever, dumping its remains in a tree line and burying it under brush, according to court documents.

He told investigators the dogs were chasing deer.

If convicted, Lerfald faces up to a year in jail.
