COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered that flags of the state of Ohio be lowered in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

According to a release from his office, DeWine said all flags of the United States and Ohio will be flown at half-staff throughout the state until 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Kirk, 31, was shot and killed while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem.

The shooting occurred as Kirk was taking questions from audience members about mass shootings and gun violence. Video footage shows Kirk speaking under a tent when a single gunshot rang out, striking him in the neck.

DeWine's order includes state flags at all public buildings and grounds throughout the state.
