After a hectic August of hosting three events at our home — a reception for the think tank I’m a part of, a weeklong reunion of old friends from across the country and finally a Korean barbecue for local writers under what little shade our mulberry tree provided — I knew we, (especially an exhausted Myung-Hee) needed a getaway.
The desert is as good a place as any to refresh yourself, and we have an abundance of it close by. As a one-time Lake Tahoe resident, author John Steinbeck once mused: “The great concepts of oneness and of majestic order seem always to be born in the desert.”
Planning ahead, it seemed there were two options. Looking for the surreal — there was Burning Man, near Gerlach. Seeking the serene — there is Benton Hot Springs, in Mono County.
We chose the latter.
