GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A full-scale replica of the a mastodon that was discovered near Kent City in 2022 was unveiled Wednesday at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
Starting Thursday, the public can come see the replica of the Clapp Family Mastodon. It was named after the family who owns the land where the bones were discovered. It happened Aug. 11, 2022 as a road crew in Kent County was replacing a culvert along 22 Mile Road in Kent City. Work stopped when crews discovered a three-foot-long femur. That’s when identification and excavation began.
