More than 230,000 migrants have moved to the city in the last three years, and U.S. Census data shows nearly 40% of people living in the city are foreign born.

Despite that, NY1 found the number of adults looking for help learning English has dropped.

These new arrivals, studying English as a second language at the New York Language Center, say Times Square, ethnic food and diversity are among their favorite things about the city — a city they came to for very personal reasons.

“I just came to improve my life, to help my family, to get better opportunities,” said an 18-year-old immigrant, who asked us not to show his face or use his name out of fear he might be deported. He comes to the language center to learn English four times a week.
