Gov. Kathy Hochul is taking credit for the subway seeing major felonies drop in July and August.
“This summer was the safest summer in at least 15 years. Extraordinary. Safest July, and now I’m here to report officially, the safest August in recorded history,” Hochul said.
Between June 1 and Aug. 31, overall transit crime was down nearly 10% from 2024, and there was a 21% reduction in assaults over last year, according to the governor.
The governor credited safety measures like platform barriers, LED lighting, the 10 SCOUT teams doing outreach to the mentally ill, cameras, and an increased police presence, which some riders say they appreciate.
The governor says that presence will continue, including overnight.
