An Oregon couple was sentenced to 30 days in jail after they didn’t seek help for their newborn baby when he stopped eating and had difficulty breathing.

Blair and Taylor Edwards, members of the small Christian denomination Followers of Christ in Oregon City, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of first-degree criminal mistreatment, reported The Oregonian .

It was the fourth child death among church members since the state legislature removed spiritual treatment as a defence for all homicides in 2011.

Hayden Edwards was born at home on June 24, 2023, the couple’s fourth child.

Senior deputy district attorney Rusty Amos told Clackamas County Circuit Judge Michael Wetzel during the hearing that the baby stopped eating two days later. He then struggled to breathe and turned blue.
