AUSTIN, Texas — The San Marcos Police Department is warning residents of a new scam that claims they missed jury duty and will face legal repercussions.

SMPD said it became aware of the scam after a Texas State University student was targeted. The scammers tried to pressure the student into clicking a suspicious email link and even told her to go to the police department afterward.

The department said it will never contact anyone to demand money or a payment of any kind for missing jury duty, citations or any other reason. It also encourages the public to never click on suspicious links under any circumstance, and no one should ever share their personal or financial information.
