Bill Hackney's time as deputy mayor of Maitland will soon come to an end and it's time for councillors to elect someone new.

When Cr Hackney was elected in October 2024, the councillors resolved to elect a different person into the role every 12 months.

At the council's meeting on Tuesday, September 16, the councillors will determine whether to elect a deputy mayor at all, if so for how long, and hold an election among themselves.

A deputy mayor can exercise any function of the mayor at the request of the mayor.

The position isn't required by legislation and is created at the discretion of the council.

Cr Hackney is a ward three councillor, and is part of the Penfold Independents group. He is a small business owner and has lived in Metford for more than 25 years.
