Like too many Staten Islanders, Sept. 11 brings a flood of emotions every year. While we reflect and remember those lost, not only on that terrible day 24 years ago, but every day since, I encourage everyone to do so in a way that preserves their peace.
For me, that means remembering my uncle, Firefighter Ruben David Correa of Engine 74. Based on the Upper West Side, Engine 74 mobilized like every other firehouse that sunny Tuesday morning, speeding downtown towards the burning towers. After they got downtown, my uncle had time for one fast phone call to his wife to tell her he loved her and their three daughters. That was the last we heard from him, which is a lot more than other families got.
