STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- More than two decades after the terror attacks on Sept, 11, 2001, thousands of Americans are still feeling the effects -- not just in their hearts and minds, but in their bodies as well.
The attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 people, including 274 Staten Islanders who are memorialized at the Postcards 9/11 Memorial in St. George, with thousands more later succumbing to illnesses linked to their response or cleanup efforts.
During last year’s memorial service, Gov. Kathy Hochul spoke to the borough’s large number of residents who serve as first responders, highlighting their commitment to their communities and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice to save others.
