ELSMERE, Ky. (WXIX) - Two rival football teams came together Wednesday night to remember a 15-year-old cheerleader who was fatally shot over the summer.

Campbell and Turkeyfoot middle schools were on opposite sides of the football field, but on the same side of raising awareness about domestic violence for Tristen Smith.

Her boyfriend is accused of gunning her down in Elsmere on July 21.

Tristen Smith’s mom, Suzanne, watched as hundreds of strangers united to remember her daughter. She said she wanted to hug them all.

“They make it OK to let me know that it’s going to be another day that we’re going to get through this,” she said.

One of the ceremony’s organizers, Desiree Lockard, said losing Tristen hit very close to home.
