A memorial service will be held Saturday for a beloved Auburn University professor emerita who was killed while walking her dog in a park last week.

Julie Gard Schnuelle , 59, was found slain about 2 p.m. Saturday in Auburn’s Kiesel Park.

The slaying happened earlier in the day, and authorities said she sustained injuries consistent with sharp force trauma.

“Julie was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, along with being an accomplished veterinarian, teacher, and scientist,” according to her obituary published Wednesday .

“Her unwavering love, joyous laughter, and strong spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.”

The memorial service is set for 12:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Opelika.
