PAWTUCKET — Rhode Island FC’s playoff hopes were already on life support.

And Wednesday night’s USL Jägermeister Cup semifinal showing didn’t instill any confidence in the Rhode Island club. Ultimately the in-season tournament result will be stored away in the club’s Year 2 archives, but the finish against Sacramento Republic FC couldn’t arrive at a worse time.

Rhode Island’s 3-0 penalty shootout defeat was demoralizing after the clubs went scoreless through 90 minutes at Centreville Bank Stadium. RIFC’s first attempt, via Maxi Rodriguez, was saved by Sacramento’s Jared Mazzola. The visiting goalie denied the shot diving to his right to put Sacramento ahead 1-0 in the penalty shootout.
