EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — The Evansville Police Department (EPD) has worked with City Councilor Mary Allen and the AARP to address the rising issue of scams involving Bitcoin ATMs.

In the past year, Evansville residents have lost more than $400,000 due to these scams, with the average victim losing about $13,000. Authorities tell 44News that the number of incidents has nearly doubled annually.

Evansville has around 70 Bitcoin ATMs, mostly located in gas stations and stores. Scammers prefer these machines because transactions are quick and anonymous.

This week, the Evansville City Council approved a new rule, which will take effect once signed by the mayor.
