The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the body of a 49-year-old hiker was found at the base of a waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge on Wednesday, officials said.

The hiker had been reported missing around 8:40 a.m., and shortly afterwards a different person called 911 and reported finding an unresponsive person at the base of Wiesendanger Falls, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Wiesendanger Falls is located along the Larch Mountain Trail, near Multnomah Falls.

The sheriff’s office’s Green Hornets search-and-rescue team responded to the scene and determined the hiker was dead, officials said.

The hiker’s name hasn’t been released. The medical examiner’s office is working to confirm the cause of death.
