Malawi’s top female FIFA referee, Bernadette Kwimbira, has announced her retirement from officiating football matches after serving in the role for 20 years.

In a statement shared on her sports page, Kwimbira said she will now focus on her responsibilities as a member of the Special Referees Committee under the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), as well as training upcoming referees and taking on other related roles.

She urged her fellow referees to remain dedicated, disciplined, and confident in their work so they can rise to greater heights, just as she did and as the late Bester Kalombo once did.

During her career, Kwimbira officiated at top international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, and several continental competitions across Africa.
