WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will posthumously award political activist Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump revealed the plan during a ceremony at the Pentagon to remember the events of 9/11.

“I’m pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom," Trump said. “The date of the ceremony will be announced and I can only guarantee you one thing, we will have a very big crowd. Very, very big.”

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is considered the highest honor a civilian can receive. The award was created in 1963 through an executive order signed by President John F. Kennedy. The honor can be awarded only by the president and is meant to recognize those who have made significant cont
