WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WTNH) — Thursday marked 24 years since four hijacked planes crashed in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, changing lives forever.

Several communities across Connecticut joined together to remember the many lives that were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

Nearly 3,000 people died on that historic day, including 161 victims with ties to Connecticut.

In Windsor Locks, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Connecticut Fire Academy. "It was a terrible day in our history," Connecticut State Comptroller Sean Scanlon said.

The rescue efforts of first responders every day will never go unnoticed, Chaplain Chip Warner with first responder ministry Redeemer's Ridge said.
