BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Today marks 24 years since the deadly terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Across North Dakota, communities are commemorating the lives lost that day in 2001.

In Mandan, the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb brought first responders together to honor those who served at Ground Zero. The event, held this morning, invited participants to climb 110 flights of stairs or walk 2,200 steps around the track—symbolizing the journey first responders took inside the Twin Towers.

Some participants wore heavy-duty gear and weighted belts to reflect the physical burden carried by the heroes of 9/11.

Sergeant Michael Breid of the Mandan Police Department shared what the event means to him:
