(NewsNation) — At least five Historically Black Colleges and Universities are under lockdown Thursday, after reporting threats against the campuses had been received.

In a social media post on Thursday, Virginia State University announced a lockdown was "out of an abundance of caution," with students advised to check their school emails for updates. Southern University and Alabama State University also announced a lockdown, adding that "Campus Police, along with other law enforcement agencies, are actively clearing all buildings on campus." Hampton University and Bethune-Cookman University announced classes would be cancelled Thursday and Friday, with students being advised not to come to campus.
