A Republican candidate for governor recently posted a photo on social media of a pride flag inside a classroom — shot through a window from outside — at Royal Oak High School, adding that if he’s elected, he’s “going to make sure the only flags in our classrooms are AMERICAN FLAGS.”
The Sept. 6 posts on Facebook and X by state Sen. Aric Nesbitt about the multi-colored flag, a symbol of support for the LGBTQ+ community, drew comments of agreement and criticism.
“LGBTQ+ flag is a symbol of alliance and SAFETY. Students should feel safe to be whoever they want, this flag being in the classroom lets them know they are welcomed as they are,” one critic said.
