The incoming head of the next Pacific leader talks has urged Turkey to "clear the way" for the region to host the next United Nations climate talks.

Palauan President Surangel Whipps said all leaders wanted the Australia-Pacific co-bid for the major Conference of Parties event to be successful and it had broad support from the rest of the world.

"We deserve to host COP31, and given the breadth and depth of support, it would be seen as an act of good faith if others would clear the way," the chair-designate of the 2026 Pacific Islands Forum said.

"We don't want to let this major international opportunity slip by us."
