E-bikes are increasing in popularity and a great way to get around town but they’re not built for speed, bike shop owners say.
E-bikes are built to travel no faster than 32 km/h. Anything above that becomes risky and going 82 km/h, like a Brantford man is alleged to have done Labour Day Monday, is off the charts dangerous, say two local experts.

“If an e-bike rider is travelling faster, it’s usually downhill or under their own pedalling power, not because the motor is propelling them beyond the legal limit,” Mike Pasquali, founder of the Canadian Electric Bike Association, said. “It’s illegal to modify an electric bike to go faster than 32 km/h, it’s also very unsafe.
“My message is this: do not modify your electric bike as the e-bike was designed to travel 32 km/hou
