Abusers could have 'free access to drain a survivor's bank account' if the current £100 contactless card limit was ditched, a charity has warned.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is consulting on proposals that would give card providers 'the flexibility to decide the right limit for them and customers'.

If it goes ahead, payments could exceed the current £100 cap, although the regulator expects most firms to retain the current threshold.

However Sam Smethers, chief executive of Surviving Economic Abuse, said the change could have a devastating impact for some.
