ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Environment Department received nearly $3 million to investigate the extent of the pollution at an old business in Albuquerque.

The site is near Carlisle and Gibson, where the old Carlisle Village Cleaners building sat from 1953 - 1975. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the business used a chemical that seeped into the soil and gave off dangerous vapors. The site was recently added to the EPA's Superfund National Priorities list, putting it among the country's most serious hazardous waste sites. The state environment department is going to be spending $2.8 million to study the extent of the contamination. The study is scheduled to begin in late fall.

Previous investigations indicated the hazardous chemicals reach at least 250 feet
