PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - TriMet has paid $830,300 to the family of a man who died after being dragged by a MAX train in Beaverton.

The transit agency’s settlement to the estate of Jonathan Ignatious Edwards III occurred in September 2024.

In December 2023 at the Beaverton Transit Center, Edwards’ long coat became caught in the doors of the MAX train as he exited the car , and he was dragged along the platform.

He later died from his injuries.

On Wednesday, TriMet released a statement about the incident and their updated safety polices:

“Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Mr. Edwards. This was a unique incident, and TriMet has taken additional steps to prevent this from ever occurring again.
