A Democrat is calling out Republicans, saying they are "full of s---" for defending Charlie Kirk, the Trump ally and MAGA influencer who was killed Wednesday, and weaponizing his death to attack Democrats — pretending that he wasn't a divisive figure.
“It was really mortifying to hear the news, to see the video. All I could think about was his wife, his children. That image is going to live forever,” Rep. Ilhan Omar told Mehdi Hasan in a live Zeteo interview Thursday on YouTube and Substack. "My heart does break for those babies."
“There are a lot of people who are out there talking about him [Kirk] just wanting to have a civil debate," she said. “These people are full of s---, and it's important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness.”
She called out Republicans for attacks, including the president, for making unfounded claims against Democrats in the aftermath of the assassination.
"I just want people to live in reality and understand where the problem is and people who are carrying out these rhetorics who are causing harm and division in our country and not come for those of us who are trying to tell the truth about where we are and where we need to go," Omar said.
Omar also expressed concern for her safety — that she has dealt with death threats — citing her mentor Melissa Hortman, and her husband and their dog, who were assassinated in June. She said she worries about other politically motivated assassinations.
"There isn't going to be enough screening and security to ever shield you," she said. "That reality, especially when you are a parent, is mortifying."
Ilhan Thursday introduced the War Powers resolution, giving Congress power to declare war and preventing President Donald Trump from conducting military strikes without Congressional approval. This resolution follows a fatal U.S. attack on a boat leaving Venezuela, which the Trump administration has claimed was carrying drugs. The strike happened in foreign waters and killed 11 people and the administration has not provided evidence of the claim.
The resolution would restrict the president from entering military conflicts without Congressional approval.
“It is Congress that declares war, and we have not been given that authority by this president,” Omar tells Mehdi and Zeteo subscribers watching the stream. “It's important for the people to recognize that we cannot just go out and terminate people. This is not something that is allowed under international law and is certainly not allowed under US law.”
