ORONO, Maine (WABI) - September 11, 2025 marks the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

2,977 people were killed when terrorists hijacked planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

A fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers were able to overpower the hijackers on the flight.

On Thursday, Mainers came together to honor the lives lost on that horrific day 24 years ago.

The Orono Fire Department welcomed neighbors from Old Town Fire Rescue, Glenburn Fire Department, and the University Volunteer Ambulance Corps for a remembrance ceremony, honoring the fallen first responders who displayed courage and commitment on that day.
