A Des Moines man previously sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a preteen girl has been found guilty again after his first conviction was reversed as the result of a controversial Iowa Supreme Court decision against the use of video to present testimony by minors.

As described in court filings, the child told police she was trying to take a bus home after a school activity in November 2021 when a stranger, who investigators later identified as Michael Dunbar, asked if she wanted a ride. Dunbar, now 68, instead drove her in the wrong direction to a rural area, where he sexually assaulted her before resuming the drive.
