Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver made a special trip to Jefferson City on Thursday to speak out against a proposed congressional map that state lawmakers are considering.

Many Democrats say the new map puts Cleaver’s seat at risk because the proposed map would split Kansas City into three districts and stretch his current district deep into rural Republican territory, dramatically weakening Democratic voting strength.

After testifying to a Senate committee, he told reporters that he never gets himself involved in the efforts of people trying to get the attention of the General Assembly.
