BENTON, Arkansas — On a day when Americans remember so many brave first responders, people in Benton gathered Thursday to honor one more.
Benton and Saline County officials, as well as several first responders, were present as the I-30 bridge over the Saline River was officially named after Paul Baker, a volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty in 2007.
“Lieutenant Paul Baker was doing one of the things that he does best,” Matt Brumley, Saline County Judge, said. “That’s rendering care and trying to rescue somebody that's entrapped in a vehicle. He lost his footing and fell approximately 40 feet to his death.”
It’s been eighteen years since Baker, who was with the Turtle Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Benton, passed away.
