Football fans of a certain age — and especially Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers fans of a certain age — have a vivid memory of the famous Joe Montana-Dwight Clark connection.
It became known as “The Catch” — Clark’s reception at the back line of a Candlestick Park end zone, executed with 51 seconds left to play in the NFC Championship game played on Jan. 10, 1982.
That perfect pass was delivered by a heavily pressured Montana, who rolled to his right and extended the play until he fired a high fastball onto Clark’s fingertips. The 49ers would win 28-27 and go on to capture the first of their organization’s five Super Bowl titles.
