COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Supreme Court has lifted a block that stopped the state from turning over the sensitive data of millions of voters to the federal government.
Earlier this summer, the US Department of Justice requested South Carolina and other states hand over information from all of their registered voters.
That sparked a lawsuit to prevent that from happening, filed by Calhoun County voter Anne Crook, who claimed disclosing this data would violate her right to privacy guaranteed in the state constitution.
“They want to guard against identity theft and all these other things you hear about. They just don’t want all the information just out there on the Internet,” said plaintiff attorney Brad Hutto, who also serves as the Democratic Leader in the state Senat
