WASHINGTON (WV News) — Getting rid of West Virginia’s mandates for school vaccinations would be “a step in the wrong direction” for public health, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said Thursday.

Capito, speaking during her weekly press briefing, said she supports childhood immunizations and hopes the state’s current vaccine requirements for school entry remain in place.

“I’ve seen President Trump speak in favor of vaccines that have worked for decades, for our generation and for our children and grandchildren’s generations, so I’m supportive of that,” she said. “I personally think that removing all required vaccinations would be a step in the wrong direction, and I believe that’s what President Trump said at his last press conference.”
