LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Volunteers came together at Cave Hill National Cemetery Thursday morning to honor fallen military members by giving back, cleaning, caring for, and realigning headstones across the sacred grounds.

“Just look at all the people that are out here,” one volunteer said, taking in the crowd spread across the rows of markers. “Each with a story, more than just a headstone.”

The effort was part of Carry The Load’s National Day of Service and Remembrance, one of many events held at cemeteries across the country.

Founded by two Navy SEAL veterans, the nonprofit works to connect Americans to the sacrifices made by military service members and first responders.

“It’s important that we do something to honor and respect them,” a volunteer said.
