WREX — Byron resident and former Aurora firefighter, Randall Leek is remembering September 11th, 2001, having traveled to New York to help in the aftermath.

Leek and five of their other Aurora firefighters traveled to help with recovery.

This came after 30 years of fighting fires in the Stateline as a third-generation firefighter himself.

"You know, it was always about helping people. I mean, from the time I learned about it as a young kid, it was like I remember being at family functions or at the dinner table and my dad said, "Well I got to go," Leek said.

Leek first heard about the news of the terrorist attacks as he was getting off work on the 11th, going home to take care of things there, before springing into action the next morning.
